Developer Q&A finally released, awesome strategy info

Here is an excerpt from the developers Q&A session from the official online forums.  Do we finally get some answers on the math behind the combat system?  Read for yourself!

Q: What does “500 damage to buildings” actually mean? Do buildings have hitpoints, or what? What are the specifics of how it works. Is siege unit damage reduced between attack types siege vs assault ?
A: VW: The building costs are considered as “hitpoints”, e.g. if upgrade to level 7 took 10.000 resources, it takes 10.000 damage to destroy that level.

Q: What are ships classified as? artillery? or are they there own unit type? if so, what are they weak against?
A: VW: Attacking ships are counted as artillery.

Q: If you attack a city and he has a high number of units weak against magic but he also has pallys and you attack with mages, do the pallys take the hit first? or do the mages attack the weak units first? or is it random?
A: VW: The attack is done simultaneously; there are no “turns” in our combat. The defenders get assigned to the different types of attackers, proportional to the attack values sums of the attacking units.

Q: What is the spawn rates for the different boss types?
{Is it time factor, number of raids lv of players on continent or something else entirely that affect the levels they appear at, for instance I’ve only seen lv’s 1-4 so far and mostly just dragons a few hydras the odd moloch and never seen an octopus yet!}
A: VW: Bosses spawn randomly depending on player cities amount and level. If there are more cities in an area, more bosses will spawn nearby to keep it fair (about the same amount of bosses per city).

Q: What is the deciding factor in boss despawning?
A: VW: Bosses despawn after a time or if a certain amount of players sent attacks.

Q: Please explain the battle mechanics. What exactly is the math behind battle results?
A: At this moment in time, we do not intend to release an in-depth look at the battle mechanics.

Q: Why is it that lawless cities cost the same settlement costs as creating a new city from scratch?
A: VW: No special reason, overall founding a city is not too expensive in our opinion.

LoU BoS Update version 1.2.3- New Greasemonkey script to help your strategy

LoU BoS version 1.2.3

This script is great for reporting and keeping on top of massive armies and empires.  A must have for any serious player.  Check it out.

Tested in Firefox 3.6 with greasemonkey extension installed and in Chrome (6.0.495.0 dev)

Changelog:
26-08-2010 added fetching resources to summary (using ‘Request resources’ server call)
25-08-2010 added dungeons and region to summary page, bug fix of report export in Chrome

Features:
- select reports by type
- export reports in text form
- reports list widget has decreased time column width
- basic summary widget
- basic combat calculator
- jump to some coordinates button

Implementation details:
- most of the time script doesn’t make calls to LoU server, the only time when script does it is when player wants to export some report or populate combat calculator with scout report details
- it doesn’t contain any malicious code, you could check it by yourself because source code is included in non obsfucated form
- it contains portions of game javascript code – part of webfrontend.data.City class is copied in order to make summary screen working
- jump to some coordinates dialog comes from LoU Tweak
- human_time function taken from LoU Summary

Tested on English server but thanks to Secusion it should work also on German servers.
NOTICE:  It should work fine when LoU Tweak is also installed.

Patch Notes Explained – Navy Speed Huge Increase

If you guys havent noticed there have been some nice changes with the new patch.  Thank god EA is truly showing that it will continue to invest in this game.  Silvanoshi over at the LOU forums has posted explanations and screen shots of some of the newer features.  Check it out.

Almost as a foot note we see: The build speed of ships has increased by 33%.

WHAT! 33% is a huge number.  Start to ramp up your navies or your going to be plowed over.  War Galleons will rule this game at this rate.  Max build speed for a war gal now must be significantly under and hour.

HELLO AGAIN – MILITARY STRATEGY 101

I AM DEEP IN WAR WITH THOUSANDS OF BODIES PILING HIGH BENEATH MY WALLS……thats why I haven’t updated the past few days.  They revamped the UI and it looks so much better and it seems to be alot faster for me (mac chrome).

Here are some lessons I have learned, some the hard way for military campaigns.

Dont trust anyone, even teammates that you know have spoken to the enemy.

Build at least one siege city.  Great for Rams but more importantly ballista and towers will rock when shrines drop.

Use fake attacks like its going out of style….oh wait…it already is.  Spamming them does get annoying.

Feignt attacks are what will truly trick your opponents.  Who cares if you lose a few thousand troops to leave his capital bare for long enough to make the time travel impossible to save it.

Brand New Strategy Tool: Lord of Ultima combat calculator

Finally someone is trying to make sense of this mysterious combat system EA has created and has yet to release details about.  This has released his beta beta beta version of a combat calculator that will simulate the outcome of a military encounter whether it be a siege, raid, or plunder.  He has a microsite up dedicated to it.  You can find it here: http://www.archinquisitor.info/.  Mad props to this guy.  I will have to dust off my PC and give this thing a whirl.  Check it out leave some comments if you have had the chance to try it out and let me know how it works.
